A Guide to Visiting Ross Creek Cedars

How to Get There

From Troy, drive east on Highway 2 for three miles until you hit the junction with Highway 56. Turn north. Follow for 18 miles until you reach the south end of Bull Lake, and catch Ross Creek Cedars Road 398. A short 4.3-mile drive will lead you to the parking area.

Best Time to Visit

Gates open early to mid-May, and you can explore until late October, depending on the snow conditions.

Things to Do

Explore the Nature Trail

Dive into the heart of the adventure on the 0.9-mile paved nature trail. The trail leads you to the ancient cedar grove. Along the way, you will find lush, gigantic trees with informative signs about their history and incredible ecosystems.

Hike at Ross Creek Trail 142

Feel up for a challenge? Conquer the 4.5-mile Ross Creek Trail 142. This scenic trail winds alongside the creek, offering breathtaking views of the cedars and the majestic mountains.

Go on a Picnic

Sit at one of the picnic tables and savor a peaceful lunch under the towering cedar canopy.

Watch Wildlife

Find deer, elk, bears, birds, and other wildlife on your trip. Remember to keep a safe distance from these animals and follow the rules.

Go Fishing

Bring your rod if you’ve got a fishing license and a passion for it! The Ross Creek is renowned for its incredible trout fishing.

Travel Tips

Mountain weather can be tricky, so layer up for surprises from the sun and rain. Opt for sturdy and comfy footwear, as the trails might be wet and rough. Also, there aren’t any amenities at the cedar grove. Packaging water and snacks is a good idea to keep the energy high. Most importantly, bring garbage bags and clean up before you leave. Campfires are not allowed in the area for safety reasons.
