Exploring the National Bison Range: A Guide for Visitors

The National Bison Range is more than 18,500 acres and is home to around 350 bison. It comprises grasslands, ponds, and forests with Douglas fir and ponderosa pine trees. Along with the bison, elk, deer, pronghorn, bighorn sheep, mountain lions, bears, and over 200 types of birds also call this place home. The Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes (CSKT) currently manage the Bison Range as a wildlife refuge. This area has a long history with buffalo. It has existed since 1908.

National Bison Range Statistics and Facts

The nature preserve is in Moiese, Montana, and is open year-round to visitors. Also home to the Flathead River, the Range has a Visitor Center with historical info, a gift shop, cabins, bars, and sporting goods stores.

Activities at the National Bison Range

Visitors can enjoy auto tours at the wildlife refuge. The Auto Tour on Red Sleep Drive is open from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, with the last entrance at 4:00 pm. Hiking is also allowed on designated trails. You may check with the Visitors Center for details.

Red Sleep Drive

This trail is a 19-mile loop only open in the summer (May-Oct). This winding road takes you through the middle of the range, up Red Sleep Mountain, and back down to Buffalo Prairie Drive. Along the way, you can stroll on two walking trails, enjoy epic views of the valley, and spot incredible wildlife. Red Sleep Drive is a two-hour adventure one way.

Buffalo Prairie Drive

This 14-mile route is in the northern part of the range. Unlike Red Sleep, this one is open all year round. It’s a scenic road trip following Mission Creek. It’s also one of the best spots for seeing bison, deer, elk, and pronghorn. Buffalo Prairie Drive is a quick half-hour ride.

Visitors must always stay 100 yards away from bison for safety. There are picnic areas and sanitation stations available within the range.

Follow the rules to protect the local ecosystem. Stick to trails, and keep a safe distance from animals. Plus, don’t leave any garbage. Hunting and firearms are prohibited also.
